Jaime Z. Galvez Tan, M.D.

 

Dr. Jaime Galvez Tan, a Filipino living in Manila, has been a community and clinical practitioner of natural healing and integrative medicine for the last thirty years.

Jaime's expertise includes grassroots community work in far flung doctor-less rural areas; developing international, national and local health care policy, planning, field-operations and management programs; developing faculties within colleges of medicine and health sciences; managing a clinical medical practice combining North American/European medicine with Asian/Filipino traditional medicine; developing private sector health businesses; developing health care research programs.

Jaime's career engagements include Professor of Medicine at the University of the Philippines; Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of the Philippines; Consultant to the World Bank, European Union, UNFPA, Asian Development Bank, Canada Fund, WHO, UNICEF, ILO, UNDP, USAID, AusAid; Secretary of the Department of Health of the Government of the Philippines; Executive Director of the National Institute of Health in the Philippines; Regional Adviser in Health and Nutrition for East Asia and the Pacific Region for UNICEF.

Jaime is the author of seven books: Our Health, Our Lives (1982), Fruits & Vegetables with Medicinal Properties (1983), The Health Curriculum in Philippine Basic Education (2005), Community Managed Maternal and Newborn Care (2006), Hilot: The Filipino Traditional Massage (2006), Medicinal Fruits & Vegetables (2008) and Community Leadership in Population and Reproductive Health (2008).

Jaime has also authored more than forty published papers on medicine and health development and his life story has been incorporated in two books: Revolution from the Heart by Niall O'Brien (1987) and Beyond the Hospital: A Concept of Community Based Medical Practice by Grace De La Costa-Ymzon (1994).

Jaime's significant credentials include a Bachelor of Science from the University of the Philippines; a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of the Philippines; a Masters in Public Health with a Letter of Excellence from the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium; a Fellowship at the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute of Leadership and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the United States.

Jaime is currently the President of Health Futures Foundation, Inc. and the Health Director of The Natural Shelf, a Philippines-based company dedicated to proving and promoting premium quality natural health products made from tropical plants, fruits and vegetables.
